METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing gum from concrete usually depends on the gum’s age and level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the chewing gum was left recently and it has not penetrated the surface, we are sometimes able to remove it by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping the gum off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a more forgiving substance compared to a warm and stringy glob. Once the gum is frozen, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper right under the gum residue. Next we slide the scraper slowly beneath the gum and the entire piece should peel right off of the concrete.

The above process is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove gum that is already black, or is smashed deep down into the concrete, we use a hot water power washer with the heat turned up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal service, we do not use high pressure because that could damage the surface of the concrete!

Our pressure washers never uses more pressure than needed to clean commercial concrete. These surfaces can be destroyed a lot easier than most people think, especially if they’re only 1-2 years old. Concrete can need up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our gum removal professional.
